What is a Clue Hunt? A Beginner’s Guide
A clue hunt is a walk where you solve clues. Simple right?!
Walks? Boring, uneventful, what your nan does (kidding, we love a walk). Clue hunts? A puzzle-filled adventure where every street, building, and sign might hold the next piece of the answer!
And once you’ve done one… you’ll never see a place the same way again (trust us). At X Hunts HQ we can’t pass a plaque or an art installation or a mural without thinking ‘ooo… will that make a good clue?!’
So… What is a Clue Hunt?
At X Hunts we call it a clue hunt which is a self-guided walking adventure where you solve clues to reveal a final quote.
Other names include treasure hunt, scavenger hunt, clue trail, outdoor escape room but they all amount to roughly the same thing! In this post we’ll call them clue hunts for the sake of simplicity.
Each clue is based on something in your surroundings — a sign, a building, a statue, or a small detail most people would never notice.
How Do Clue Hunts Work?
Some clue hunts involve a designated route (either written instructions or a map) or follow a system of one clue leading onto the next.
While all of our clue hunts are slightly different (and many feature mini quests within the hunt), they all follow a simple (but very satisfying) format:
1. Order online
Order your X Hunt clue hunt online and it will be delivered straight to your front door, first class.
2. Start anywhere on the enclosed map
Your clue hunt will contain a central pull-out map. The clues are numbered but you can start (and finish) anywhere.
3. Solve the clues
You can work through them in any order. Want to go from 1 to the end? Do it! Even numbers first? Go for your life! Prime numbers, then your lucky numbers, then the Fibonnachi sequence, then what’s left? You do you!
There’s no time limit, no pressure, and no ‘right pace’ — just you, your team, and a series of satisfying ‘got it!’ moments.
4. Decipher the final quote
When you’ve solved all the clues, or does as many as you feel up to, use the answers and the cipher grid at the end of the document. At X Hunts we always recommend finding a place to park yourself when you do so - a bench, a train, the pub, a café…
5. Submit your answer
Once you’ve got the final quote submit it to hq@xhunts.co.uk to be in with a chance of winning the monthly prize draw. Or don’t, just sit and feel smug, up to you.
What Makes Clue Hunts So Popular?
Clue hunts have quietly become one of the most popular outdoor activities in the UK — and it’s not hard to see why.
They’re satisfying
Solving a clue using something you’ve just spotted feels ridiculously good. Who doesn’t like feeling clever?!
They get you exploring
You’ll see places you might never have found otherwise.
You notice more
Suddenly you’re looking at everything differently — signs, buildings, tiny details. Even just looking above a shop façade can reveal all sorts of details, e.g. there’s a Boots on Winchester High Street that has four bishops carved into it, did you know that?!
They’re social
Perfect for couples, families, or groups of friends. If you like solving things, exploring, or saying “wait… I think I’ve got it” — you’ll enjoy a clue hunt.
They’re screen-free
No apps. No notifications. Just the real world.
Clue Hunts vs Treasure Hunts vs Escape Rooms
People often ask how clue hunts compare to similar activities.
Here’s the quick version:
Treasure hunts (or scavenger hunts)
Often simpler and more linear — usually aimed at children. And we don’t want to falsely advertise, there is no actual treasure (please don’t help yourself to a souvenir!).
Escape rooms
Indoor, timed, and more intense puzzle experiences. Also a lot of fun.
Clue hunts
The perfect middle ground:
Outdoors
Self-paced
Puzzle-driven
Exploration-focused
Think of it as an escape room spread across an entire town.
Why Paper-Based?
Many modern experiences rely heavily on apps/accounts/having signal and battery, our clue hunts don’t.
Paper-based hunts are:
More immersive (you’re not staring at a screen)
More reliable (no signal or battery issues)
More social (everyone can gather around)
More memorable (it feels like a proper adventure)
You do however need a working pen or pencil…
Ready to Try a Clue Hunt?
If you’re curious, the best way to understand a clue hunt is to try one.
At X Hunts, we create beautifully designed, paper-based clue hunts across towns and cities in the UK.
Each one is carefully crafted to:
Challenge (but not frustrate)
Show you something new
Leave you feeling just a little bit clever
Explore our clue hunts and start your first adventure.
Final Thought
The next time you walk through a town or city, take a moment to look around. Really look.
Hidden in plain sight are clues, details, and stories you’d normally miss. An X Hunt just gives you a reason to find them.
